Sealing of natural stone benchtops
Marble and Granite benchtops require regular sealing to help prevent/delay liquids from penetrating into the surface but does not guarantee it will not stain. It is advisable to clean up spills immediately.
Please note that sealed benchtops (predominantly marble, but any stone in general) are still prone to etching from acidic substances (such as, but not limited to lemon, vinegar, oranges, tomatoes, soft drinks etc.)
What you will require:
- Methylated spirits
- Clean, dry, white cotton cloths - 4-6 small squares no bigger than 20cm square
- DRY TREAT STAIN PROOF PLUS sealer, available for purchase from Chesini House or any Dry Treat stockist
Instructions:
Please adhere to all safety and first aid instructions as advised on product labelling.
Always work in a well ventilated area. For larger areas, work on a small area at a time
Important: do not let sealer completely dry on stone surface
- Clean stone thoroughly using methylated spirits.
- Always test adequacy of sealer in a small, inconspicuous area first. Using a small, white cotton cloth, apply sealer liberally onto stone and saturate stone such that the stone looks wet. Avoid sealer contacting surrounding areas (do not get sealer on floors, oven, kitchen panels, splashbacks etc.)
- Allow surface to become touch dry - the amount of time will vary based on surface absorption, weather conditions etc.
- Repeat step 2
- Once second coat of sealer starts to dry (surface will look dull and smeary) use remaining clean white cloths to remove the excess sealer using a buffing motion.
- Congratulations, your stone is now sealed
Chesini house recommends sealing stone benchtops every 12 months as a minimum. Professional sealing companies are available to seal your stone. A list of licensed dry treat applicators is available at drytreat.com
